Water Outage Affect Charity
Home Around Penang

Several welfare homes such as the disabled (OKU), orphans and elderly care centers in Bayan Lepas and Gelugor here are in chaos after water supply was cut off since Wednesday evening.

Agape Pulau Pinang Welfare Organisation Director, M Sharon said, the lives of the residents of the premises were facing difficulties in carrying out daily tasks due to lack of water supply.

"Until 1 pm today (Thursday) there was still no water in several areas of Gelugor and Bayan Lepas.

"In addition, the main problem faced by the 14 OKU residents and six officers at the Agape Welfare Home in Island Glades here is the lack of water supply for drinking," he said when contacted on Thursday.

He added, more disappointingly, the authorities did not give any notice or warning regarding the matter, causing no preparation to be made.

''The water supply has been off since 4 pm yesterday without any notice which caused us to not be able to store water for the residents. This is very inconvenient.

"In addition, there is also no water supply for drinking as all the nearby shops have run out of mineral water stocks following a panic buying since yesterday," he said.

Meanwhile, Seri Cahaya Welfare Home Manager in Permatang Damar Laut, V Girithren said, water supply in the area is still unavailable so far and mineral water supply is also affected there.

"We hope the water supply problem will be restored soon because we are finding it difficult to get
drinking water at this time. All mineral water
supplies at stores have been sold out
after everyone rushed to buy it yesterday,"

Previously, Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Jaseni Maidinsa said, at 6am Wednesday, the turbidity of water pumped from Sungai Muda (through Sungai Dua Canal) to the plant was recorded at 3,000 Nephelometric

She said it was an extraordinary high turbidity rating where the normal raw river water turbidity of Sungai Muda was below 1,000 NTU.

Furthermore, PBAPP expected the water supply pressure in all pipe channels throughout Penang Island to be restored at 12 noon on Thursday.
